I'm excited to show you Paradict ( https://ift.tt/WgB6P0w ), my solution for streamable multi-format serialization. Although JSON, YAML, and TOML are all human-readable, they serve different purposes. For example, TOML is specifically designed for configuration files while JSON is used as a data interchange format. Sometimes an initiative to create a binary version of JSON arises and as far as I know, it ends with an unidirectional mapping of datatypes. There is no silver bullet, yet one coherent solution built from scratch that addresses multi-format (binary and textual) serialization and configuration files would be a step forward. Earlier this year, I accidentally designed a textual data format to represent complex data structures inside a document divided into sections. The project, namely Jesth (Just Extract Sections Then Hack'em), generated an interesting discussion on HN ( https://ift.tt/aCFS45Q ). Out of curiosity, I ran some benchmarks using Jesth, JSON and MessagePack, with and without Gzip compression against a large JSON file downloaded from the web. The benchmarking gave me insights that led to the decision to evolve Jesth's ideas into a new multi-format serialization solution. I designed and built Paradict from scratch to serialize and deserialize a dictionary data structure. Although Paradict's root data structure is a dictionary, lists, sets, and dictionaries can be nested within it at arbitrary depth. A Paradict dictionary can be populated with strings, binary data, integers, floats, complex numbers, booleans, dates, times, datetimes, comments, extension objects, and grids (matrices). There is also a schema-based validation mechanism that can contain programmatic checkers. The binary serialization format is designed with compactness in mind such as Pi with its first two decimal places, the Golden ratio with its first two decimal places, and the date of the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI would each be encoded on two bytes (not counting their respective 1-byte tag which starts each Paradict binary datum). This binary format has two levels of granularity for continuous data stream processing: a datum at the low level, which is in some cases a 2-tuple composed of a tag and its payload, and the message at the high level which is a dictionary data structure. The textual serialization format has two modes: data and config modes. Config mode implicitly treats dictionary keys as strings, removing the need to surround them with quotes, and unlike the colon (:) between a key-value pair in data mode, it uses the equal sign (=) as separator. This textual format has two levels of granularity for continuous data stream processing: a single line of text at the low level and the message at the high level which is a dictionary data structure. This is remarkable because DAGs hit a sweet spot in the middle of the three common programming paradigms (OO, event-driven, functional). Let's have a DAG as the top-level structure of our applications. Data-fetching and onChange handlers live in DAG nodes, next to the data they act on. The UI flows out from the DAG with fine-grained reactivity. Our app state is effortlessly consistent, because any outside change (user action, api result) unleashes a graph traversal. RΞASON is an OSS Typescript framework for developing LLM apps that uses Typescript's interfaces to get structured output from an LLM. While there are other TS LLM frameworks, I think RΞASON fills a unique space in the market: it's laser-focused on only three areas and, most importantly, actively stays away from pre-made prompting & retrieval. I've been in the LLM space since GPT-3 originally came out, and I've always had problems with other frameworks, such as LangChain. I dislike that they focus a ton on out-of-the-box prompting & pre-made agents — I , as the dev, should be the one in charge of it. My belief is that LLMs are a new primitive that programmers can use — not a new way to program; it's still up to the programmer to do the right thing & create the right abstractions. Therefore, it's the developer's job to learn the new concepts that come from this new primitive, such as prompting & retrieval. I see a similar analogy here with ORMs & SQL. What RΞASON helps with is in areas that don't differentiate your app: getting structured outputs, handling streaming, and observability. The goal of RΞASON is to make creating great LLM experiences easier. We try to accomplish this by simplifying the hard stuff & maximizing performance — decreasing as much as possible the TTUB. RΞASON is OpenTelemetry compatible — which allows observability in almost any tool (Zipkin, Jaeger, paid solutions, etc.). I'd really love to hear feedback about RΞASON! Azure OpenAI services was born out of companies needing enhanced security and access control for using different GPT models. I want to build an OSS version of Azure OpenAI services that people could self host in their own infrastructure. "How can I track LLM spend per API key?" "Can I create a development OpenAI API key with limited access for Bob?" "Can I see my LLM spend breakdown by models and endpoints?" "Can I create 100 OpenAI API keys that my students could use in a classroom setting?" These are questions that BricksLLM helps you answer. BricksLLM is an API gateway that let you create API keys with rate limit, cost control and ttl that could be used to access all OpenAI and Anthropic endpoints with out of box analytics. When I first started building with OpenAI APIs, I was constantly worried about API keys being comprised since vanilla OpenAI API keys would grant you unlimited access to all of their models. There are stories of people losing thousands of dollars and the existence of a black market for stolen OpenAI API keys. This is why I started building a proxy for ourselves that allows for the creation of API keys with rate limits and cost controls. I built BricksLLM in Go since that was the language I used to build performative ads exchanges that scaled to thousands of requests per second at my previous job. A lot of developer tools in LLM ops are built with Python which I believe might be suboptimal in terms of performance and compute resource efficiency. One of the challenges building this platform is to get accurate token counts for different OpenAI and Anthropic models. LLM providers are not exactly transparent with the way how they count prompt and completion tokens. In addition to user input, OpenAI and Anthropic pad prompt inputs with additional instructions or phrases that contribute to the final token counts. For example, Anthropic's actual completion token consumption is consistently 4 more than the token count of the completion output. The latency of the gateway hovers around 50ms. Half of the latency comes from the tokenizer. If I start utilizing Go routines, might be able to lower the latency of the gateway to 30ms. BricksLLM is not an observability platform, but we do provide integration with Datadog so you can get more insights regarding what is going on inside the proxy. Compared to other tools in the LLMOps space, I believe that BricksLLM has the most comprehensive features when it comes to access control. Most of the things I developed were for myself or just to get familiar with a specific technology or piece of software. I never really deployed anything so far. Not too long ago, my SO and me bought a deck of cards with different yoga poses on them. Since we both work from our office chairs more than 8 hours a day, we wanted to do something for our body and this is where the yoga idea originated from. After the first 10 minutes of reading through the leaflet and another 30 minutes of choosing the poses and putting them in a somewhat meaningful order, we finally started with our own yoga session. It was clear to me: this is not something my SO wants to do every day. Doing the same order of poses every day wasn't an appealing alternative either. Away with the cards and on the lookout for an alternative again. Hence I started developing an application for us, that automatically generates a yoga session. It shows the poses one by one and guides you through the session. Each session is unique, which makes it more interesting over the days. The app even lets you create your custom flow that you select or it chooses among poses that fit your experience level just right. I have recently launched this application and made it publicly available. It is working (in most of the cases) and we are pretty happy about how it turned out. We used it many times in our lunch breaks or after a stressful day to calm down. I have figured out that there are no good local options: most of the VS Code plugins simply connect neural networks to the code while copilot has extensive post and pre processing steps. Some of them still work with original copilot plugin (ie sends data to MS), some require complicated setup to make it work. Show HN: Neum AI – Open-source large-scale RAG framework Over the last couple months we have been supporting developers in building large-scale RAG pipelines to process millions of pieces of data. We documented our approach in an HN post ( https://ift.tt/2pnotFI ) a couple weeks ago. Today, we are open sourcing the framework we have developed. The framework focuses on RAG data pipelines and provides scale, reliability, and data synchronization capabilities out of the box. For those newer to RAG, it is a technique to provide context to Large Language Models. It consists of grabbing pieces of information (i.e. pieces of news articles, papers, descriptions, etc.) and incorporating them into prompts to help contextualize the responses. The technique goes one level deeper in finding the right pieces of information to incorporate. The search for relevant information is done through the use of vector embeddings and vector databases. Those pieces of news articles, papers, etc. are transformed into a vector embedding that represents the semantic meaning of the information. These vector representations are organized into indexes where we can quickly search for the pieces of information that most closely resembles (from a semantic perspective) a given question or query. For example, if I take news articles from this year, vectorize them, and add them to an index, I can quickly search for pieces of information about the US elections. To help achieve this, the Neum AI framework features: Starting with built-in data connectors for common data sources, embedding services and vector stores, the framework provides modularity to build data pipelines to your specification. The connectors support pre-processing capabilities to define loading, chunking and selecting strategies to optimize content to be embedded. This also includes extracting metadata that is going to be associated to a given vector. The generated pipelines support large scale jobs through a high throughput distributed architecture. The connectors allow you to parallelize tasks like downloading documents, processing them, generating embedding and ingesting data into the vector DB. For data sources that might be continuously changing, the framework supports data scheduling and synchronization. This includes delta syncs where only new data is pulled. Once data is transformed into a vector database, the framework supports querying of the data including hybrid search using the available metadata added during pre-processing. As part of the querying process, the framework provides capabilities to capture feedback on retrieved data as well as run evaluations against different pipeline configurations. We've been writing backends for multiple different big and small companies and noticed that backend development progresses in way too similar cycles. At first people write a small set of services or in better case a single service to do what's needed. At some point the tech debt becomes too much of a hassle to handle as company grows, engineers are starting to scale the codebase, rewriting code, splitting monolith, introducing microservices and eventually after a bunch of iterations like that, people write some sort of in-house internal developer platform to quickly spin up services. The amount of effort it takes to go through this is really unnecessary. Every team needs to get a bunch of libraries for storage, configuration, logging, metrics, etc and duct tape them all together until it works, then write boilerplate for all of that, and then there's also infrastructure code and configs to set up deployment. So, we think that it doesn't have to be that way and that's why we wrote Mify, which is an open-source tool that generated and maintains all boilerplate code for the necessary building blocks of a backend service and help with deployment. Background: When I transitioned from a development role to a product management role, I realized there was no real organization or structure to the way I worked as a PM. Tasks I needed to complete were scattered across emails, Teams, meetings, etc. I was inundated with emails and found myself juggling multiple browser windows, numerous open tabs, and other desktop applications. This overwhelming situation made it clear that success in my new role hinged on being self-organized and focused. After reading the book "Deep Work" by Cal Newport, I recognized that my work habits were counterproductive to accomplishing meaningful work. After that, I delved further into the "focus and productivity" path, read more books on the subject, and decided to integrate these concepts and methodologies into a single app. I could have created a specialized tool that addressed only one or two problems, like many other apps out there, but I knew that building a single app designed to assist with the workflow from start to finish was the only way to eliminate as many distractions and friction points as possible. Honestly, I could've wrapped up development way sooner if I'd just tackled one issue. But what's the point if one part of my workflow rocks and the rest sucks? What's the problem with modern work? You might be using a combination of a task manager and a calendar to track tasks. To work on a task, though, you probably bounce to your browser full of tabs. If you use desktop apps like Teams, Slack, or Discord, this bouncing back and forth becomes even worse because every link you click on opens in the browser. The real problem is when we jump to a browser full of tabs every time, we get distracted by all the tabs and get sidetracked, or our old habits kick in due to how our brains are now wired, and we start aimlessly browsing. This causes a lot of friction in our flow. This is one of the main reasons why people today are not able to focus or don't feel motivated to get work done. What usually takes 1 hour to complete can take up to 3 hours. What's unique about Floutwork? The app uses LLMs to analyze the GitHub profiles of users who have starred the repository, capturing key details like the topics they are interested in. It takes screenshots of the stargazer's GitHub webpage, extracts text using an OCR model, and extracts insights embedded in the extracted text using LLMs. This app is inspired by the “original” Stargazers app written by Spencer Kimball (CEO of CockroachDB). While the original app exclusively used the GitHub API, this LLM-powered app built using EvaDB additionally extracts insights from unstructured data obtained from the stargazers’ webpages. Our analysis of the fast-growing GPT4All community showed that the majority of the stargazers are proficient in Python and JavaScript, and 43% of them are interested in Web Development. Web developers love open-source LLMs! We found that directly using GPT-4 to generate the “golden” table is super expensive — costing $60 to process the information of 1000 stargazers. To maintain accuracy while also reducing cost, we set up an LLM model cascade in a SQL query, running GPT-3.5 before GPT-4, that lowers the cost to $5.5 for analyzing 1000 GitHub stargazers. Show HN: Dolce – Get notified if something (bad) happens to your containers Hi HN, while I was on vacation this year the shop of my wife was suddenly down and we only noticed once the emails of customers rolled in. After fixing it on my phone I thought there has to be a better way to notice when your docker container die or are in a restart loop for whatever reason. Now I know there are lots of tools like healthcheck.io and monocker, however none seemed to match my simple use case of getting notified _via email_ when the running– or health-status of any docker container changes. So I did what every SE would do in that case and hacked another solution but this one is mine :). I also always wanted to do a project with deno and get up to speed on typescript. This was also a great reason to finally look into using GitHub Actions to automate some of the tedious tasks. Fun fact: After reading on here about Deno Queues, I rewrote the message buffering and backoff completely and could greatly simplify the code. TL;DR - What is this: Get notification via - EMail (BYOSMTP) - Discord - Telegram if any (or only selected) containers on your host die or change their health status. I also tried to handle unexpected restarts of the container the tool is running in gracefully without loosing any events that happened before and even while the service was down. To make sure you are not spammed by notifications if a container goes into a restart loop, there is also a configurable exponential backoff function. I tried to make using the tool as easy as possible (by getting inspired on how monocker is set up). Show HN: Ultra-Realistic Generative Fill with AI and 3D Hey all, You've probably seen projects that add objects to an image from a style or text prompt, like InteriorAI (levelsio) and Adobe Firefly. The prevalent issue with these diffusion-based inpainting approaches is that they don't yet have great conditioning on lighting, perspective, and structure. You'll often get incorrect or generic shadows; warped-looking objects; and distorted backgrounds. ### What is Fill 3D? Fill 3D is an exploration on doing generative fill in 3D to render ultra-realistic results that harmonize with the background image, using industry-standard path tracing, akin to compositing in Hollywood movies. ### How does it work? 1. Deproject: First, deproject an image to a 3D shell using both geometric and photometric cues from the input image. 2. Place: Draw rectangles and describe what you want in them, akin to Photoshop's Generative Fill feature. 3. Render: Use good ol' path tracing to render ultra-realistic results. ### Why Fill 3D? + The results are insanely realistic (see video in the github repo, or on the website). + Fast enough: Currently, generations take 40-80 seconds. Diffusion takes ~10seconds, so we're slower, but for the level of realism, it's pretty good. + Potential applications: I'm thinking of virtual staging in real estate media, what do you think? ### Check it out at https://fill3d.ai + There's API access! :D + Right now, you need an image of an empty room. Will loosen this restriction over time. Fill 3D is built on Function ( https://fxn.ai ). With Function, I can run the Python functions that do the steps above on powerful GPUs with only code (no Dockerfile, YAML, k8s, etc), and invoke them from just about anywhere. Show HN: Basketball Play Designer In a company hackathon this weekend, I thought it would be fun to build a basketball play designer. Essentially, you enter some information about the type of play you want, and it generates a play following these requirements. I was imagining it might be useful for stuff like: 1. Designing personalized plays for first-time coaches: "Give me a play that gets my shooting guard an open three-pointer. My shooting guard shoots the best from the right wing, and my point guard has a weak left hand. My center sets great screens, so have my center set an off-ball screen for my shooting guard." 2. Brainstorming novel plays for long-time coaches: "Generate a novel play out of the UCLA set." It is loaded in with an example play, so make sure to hit the buttons to generate new plays with the entered information. The animation generation is based on the play-by-play and is a bit finicky, so you can try to generate new play-by-plays/animations if the first ones don't work well.
